Chapter Six
Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely get her key in her lock. She’d been so sure that she’d come back to a trashed room that she’d been shocked to find her door still locked. It was possible, she supposed, that the man had picked the lock, gone inside, then re-locked the door to throw her off, but it seemed like an awful lot of work for a thirty dollar watch. And, if he’d just tossed the place, why would he have bothered to lock the doors again?
Still, she tensed as she pushed the door open and she waited outside as she reached around to turn on the light. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw her room exactly as she’d left it. Someone who was willing to pick her up on the street, then beat the shit out of her wasn’t going to be careful about looking for something in her hotel room. Either the guy was lying low until he was sure she hadn’t told the cops anything, or he didn’t know where she lived. She hoped it was the latter because she couldn’t afford to move. She was just going to have to be smart about what she did from here.
The first thing she was going to do was make sure no one could find the watch, even if they did search her room. She headed into the bathroom, avoiding looking in the mirror. She really didn’t want to know if she looked as awful as she felt. She took the top off of the toilet tank and, sure enough, there was the plastic bag with the watch in it. She took it out and dried the bag with some paper towels. She needed to hide this somewhere outside of her room, somewhere no one would think to look for it, and where no one could accidentally stumble onto it.
An idea popped into her head. It was crazy, but just cliché enough that it would probably work. She slipped out of her room, keeping her eyes peeled for anyone who seemed overly interested in what she was doing. She didn’t need to worry, she quickly saw. All of the other girls were still out working and any of them who’d brought men back to their place were behind closed doors. No one was paying attention to her as she opened the door to the maintenance closet.
When she and Benny had been in here before, she’d seen a grate in the far back corner. It looked like an old heating duct, but she knew from experience that there wasn’t any heat pumped into the maintenance closet, so the watch would be safe there. It took her a couple of minutes to get the screws off, but she finally managed, and when she emerged from the closet several minutes later, she felt secure with her choice.
Now, she needed to know what was so important about that old watch. She’d looked over it a dozen times since she’d taken it and hadn’t seen anything special.
